Abstract:
Public health awareness in Nigeria continues to face challenges due to communication gaps, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas. Broadcast public service announcements (PSAs) have emerged as a crucial tool, yet their accessibility, cultural relevance, and impact on behavioural change remain under-examined. This study investigated the effectiveness of radio and television PSAs in promoting health awareness among residents of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. Survey research design was adopted, and a sample size of 384 respondents was determined through Cochran’s formula, based on a total population of 539,170. A multistage sampling technique was adopted to select respondents who consume health-related content from RockCity 101.9 FM and Ogun State Television (OGTV). Copies of structured questionnaire were administered with the assistance of trained field researchers. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics via SPSS. Findings revealed that PSAs are largely accessible and well-received due to their cultural and linguistic appropriateness, with a significant influence on public understanding of health risks and preventive behaviours. However, infrastructural constraints, like erratic power supply, inconsistent broadcast schedules, and limited media access, were identified as key barriers. The study concludes that PSAs hold substantial potential for driving public health improvements. It recommends enhanced scheduling strategies, increased investment in rural media infrastructure, and the prioritisation of culturally tailored radio messaging to optimise reach and impact.
