Newspaper Framing of Migration Issues in Niger State, 2023-2024

Abstract:
This research work studied Newspaper framing of migration issues in Niger State, 2023-2024. The study was set out to determine which of the frames were prevalent in the press coverage of migration issues in Niger State and to examine the factors affecting newspaper framing on migration issues. The study employed mixed research method: content analysis and in-depth interview. The Guardian and Daily Trust were content analysed for the study. The sample editions from each newspaper was 74 per year with the total of 148 editions studied between 2023-2024. The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) was used for the selection of days from 1st January, 2023-31st December 2024 to avoid error. The editions were placed carefully in the two years sample frame based on the result gotten from the random cases of the Statistical Package for the Social Science in days and months accordingly. Inter-coder reliability was tested using Holsti’s formula which showed an overall 0.94 percent agreement. Findings indicate that Nigerian newspapers report on migration issues were prevalent in responsibility and human-interest frame in 2023-2024 editions. This study recommended that Newspapers should improve on their coverage on migrant issues by reporting them to inform the government to set out security agencies in order to reduce the high level of terrorists and bandits’ attacks in Nigerian rural communities.
